Hotel & Resort Reviews: Cayman Islands
Spanish Bay Reef Resort 07/26/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My husband, sister, brother-in-law, and myself just returned from a seven night vacation to Cayman Islands.

We had booked our trip to stay at their sister site, Beach Club Colony Resort. After one night with them, we knew we had to change over to Spanish Bay Reef Resort. After the evening meal, we hailed a taxi to have a look at Spanish Bay. All it took was talking to their manager, Patti, and taking a look-see at the property to know that we had to move over to them. Patti took care of everything for us and got us moved with no problem. I might also add that she gave us a wonderful room upgrade, Ocean-front Villa units. They were wonderful and just what we had in mind.

If you are looking for a beautiful resort, friendly staff, caring personnel, and advice on anything asked, then this is the resort for you. We have stayed at several different resorts in the Caribbean, and this was by far the best! The expense was not that bad, either since this was not their high season which begins in October and ends in May.

The resort is remote and situated on the northwest side of the island. To get anywhere you either have to rent a jeep for $7.00 a day to pay for gas, rent a car around $48 a day, or use their bus system. We rented a car for three days and was able to go and see whatever we wanted. The jeeps weren't bad either -- the only drawback is having to return them 4 hours later. However, I feel that if you needed them longer and the time frame was available, they would let you have them all day.

The food is excellent!! All meals are served buffet style with many choices of cuisine. Every night had a different theme for the dinner selections. It is an all-inclusive resort which means all meals and non-premium drinks are included. I believe this is the best way to go. It is much easier on your money belt than forking over (highly elevated prices) for food. Of course, there are many wonderful restaraunts, but be prepared for an expensive bill when you are through with your meal. Eating at Spanish Bay is a good choice -- the food is excellent. The servers are very attentive and attend to your every need. We were astonished how they seemed to be one step ahead of us at all times. The staff is wonderful. I might add, also, that we were very impressed with Paul. He does it all -- bartends, serves, etc. He is very good at what he does, and I know Patti has figured that out.

Patti is a wonderful manager. She tries to make sure that everyone is comfortable and having a great time. She is the type that watches all of her guests and tries to provide them with whatever they desire. As mentioned earlier, she upgraded us within one day of our stay with them. She talks to all guests and mingles with them as well. I had many questions about their people, their culture, places to go, etc. and she was very informative. She is very impressive and Spanish Reef will be at a loss without her. She also mentioned to us that she has almost all repeat visitors and they all seem like one big family because they return so often that they get to know one another. I saw that for myself, as well. She also upgrades her repeats to a higher category room when they return.

Spanish Reef does have a beach, but it is used mainly for divers because of the coral so close to the beach. It has a wonder dive shop that lets you sign out snorkling gear when you arrive and keep it until you leave -- it is part of the all inclusive deal. If you want a sandy beach, you can catch a shuttle to their sister site, Beach Club Colony located on the 7-mile famous beach. It does have a great beach but can get crowded when the cruise ships arrive during the day. You can also get a card from Spanish Bay that allows you to eat and get drinks while you are there.

If you are expecting live entertainment, Spanish Reef does not have any other than on their Beach Party night. However, there is plenty of entertainment elsewhere on the island. One good place is the Royal Palms. It is located on the 7-mile Beach and has live entertainment on Thursday through Sunday. For other places, just ask the staff and they will be more than happy to give you advice. They are great at giving you advice if you ask them.

I would highly recommend Spanish Bay. It does have a good pool with a bar near by, and a jacuzzi located next to it. You will dine open air just a few feet from the bar and the servers are more than happy to get you your drinks during your meals.

We plan to return to the Cayman Islands and will definitely return to Spanish Bay.
