cuba hotel & resort reviews

Hotel Tryp Cayo Coco 09/05/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
I stayed at Tryp Cayo Coco in April 2000. Since this was the first time I have ever visited a resort it seemed to be pretty good. It had some bad points but I figured that was probably normal for resorts in Cuba. Now that I am planning to visit Cuba again and I have reviewed others opinions on Tryp as well as other resorts I feel that this resort needs some improvement.

The food was not that great. I pretty much ate spaghetti at the Buffet and fries and chichcabobs at the beachside grill and pizza the pizza place. Our room was very damp and smelly. When I got home to Canada my clothes reeked of mildew. The water in the shower was luke warm - sometimes cold. The throw pillows on the bed were full of mold. I stayed on the Club side. I was in a few rooms on the Colonial Side and they were much nicer.

The main bar at the Club gets pretty busy and you have to wait a while to get a drink. The big tippers get waited on hand and foot, so basically, everybody else gets served when the tippers are served. I tipped the bartenders a few times a day, but still had to wait a long time for a drink. Some of the staff are very sweet, others were kind of rude. The spanish coffee was really good and fun to watch them prepare it. They light it on fire. There was one bartender at the main bar that was very sweet and curteous, the other one was pretty grumpy.

The beach was beautiful. White soft sand and gorgeous blue clear water. I saw fish once - apparently there is hardly any fish there. No seashells on the beach - just little tiny beginings of shells it looked like. The sand was very soft to walk on - it was like silk. I loved the beach.

Saw wild dolphins one day straight out from the beach grill. Maybe 20 feet from the people who were swimming. It was really nice.

Wanted to swim with dolphins but not enough people were interested in going and they needed a large number to go - I think you have to take a bus somewhere - so I didnt get to swim with dolphins.

The shows in the evening were pretty crappy. Good for kids but later in the night they were pretty lame - kind of cheesy.

Didn't get to know a whole lot of people there because the resort is so big and I didn't find people to be overly friendly. The disco was fun. The music was excellent. Mostly dance music, old and new. All of those songs that make you want to dance as soon as you hear them. They played a little bit of Cuban music and the staff would dance.....it was really cool to watch them dance. I really enjoyed the disco. It is a pretty far walk from the club side but its worth it.

I went on a tour to see a cave and another beach and a farm. It wasnt worth it. The cave was pretty cool, they have it made into a night club. We visited a local farm as well, that was okay but nothing spectacular. The tour was mainly driving and was pretty boring - all I kept thinking was - I wish I was back at the beach.

Overall, it was still very nice to get away somewhere tropical and flake out on the beach. I had a good time but I do not plan on returning. I plan to visit a different resort next year.

Good luck wherever you plan to visit and have a fun and safe trip.
