Spent 2 weeks at Sierra Mar in March of '00. Found the road from the airport (over an hour) not for the faint of heart, but the thousands of crabs crossing (which the driver simply ran over) was interesting. The resort itself is large and the rooms well kept. There are two buildings, you want the lower (main) one, closer to the beach, and everything else. It seemed to me, that the place was really nice when DELTA built it, but new (local) management is allowing it to go downhill. For example, the covered staircase up the center of the upper building was missing part of it's roof, since a Hurricane the year before. The same storm took out the dock with the hut on the end, so don't believe the old pictures. Other little things like burnt out bulbs in the dining hall ceiling, and non-functional air conditioning may sound like nitpicks but, they reflect the whole experience. The food was bland and after 2 weeks it all looked and tasted the same. I know I make it sound terrible, it wasn't that bad, but I really hoped for an great experience. More like what we had two years before at Rio de Maries in Holguin. All in all Sierra Mar is good for a cheap week, but no longer.
