Brisas Guardalavaca (Holguin) 10/05/01

Like most people, my wife and I picked Brisas for its cost, and we expected to get what we paid for. However, we were very pleased to find that the resort is an extremely good value for money!
I think the hotel has improved significantly in the past years but the improvements have not gone noticed by the travel community - our local travel agent gave it a bad review. Perhaps because of the two newer Costa Verde resorts also serviced from Holguin airport? Or maybe because as a result of the lower price, the agent's commission is lower.... We eventually booked over the internet through Sun Vacations (Canada), Brampton office.
We stayed in the hotel section, top floor, ocean view. The hotel rooms are smaller and older than the villa but no complaints from us. It was clean and comfortable enough and they even give you a mini-fridge (unstocked though).
The hotel's private beach is adequate but not the greatest, but the public beach (1.5 km down the coast)is amazing. The two pools are great for lounging but not much good for swimming.
The good was not bad at all, tasty enough but nothing special. Both a la carte restaurants were good. The buffet restaurant in the villas is better than that in the hotel - recommended for dinner. For lunch the poolside grill is good, or the snack bar at the end of the resort. The pizza was especially good. Bring pancake syrup and bottled salad dressing.
The public areas are under-air-conditioned, and the rooms are only air-conditioned when you are in them, but I guess that's how they save money.
All in all, a great stress reliever and highly recommended.
