Rendezvous Bay Hotel 05/09/2003

We just returned from our first visit to Anguilla, staying at the Rendezvous Bay Hotel. We did a lot of research on hotels, villas,& resort options on the island and felt for a first trip that we wanted to stay somewhere that would provide a relaxed, old style Caribbean ambiance. Rendezvous Bay Hotel provided us with exactly the atmosphere we were seeking and we enjoyed the change of pace from glitzier, more high end resorts that abound on so many Caribbean islands.
We stayed in both an upstairs reef front villa room (great porch for sunset viewing!) and then moved midweek to one of Rendezvous Bay's beachfront villa rooms. The beachfront rooms are literally no more than 20 steps from the ocean and the sound of the surf lulled us to sleep each night. Rooms are clean, spacious, and have plenty of closet space. Are they showing their age? (The resort has been in operation since 1962) Yes, they are a bit worn here and there, the plumbing in the bathroom a bit dated, but everything worked well and water pressure and temperature were just fine. The rooms are decorated in pretty Caribbean prints and colors and the beds are very comfortable. They are planning to upgrade the fixtures and furniture in the beachfront rooms over this summer, so we would expect to see these already very nice rooms in even better shape when the upgrading is finished.
The staff and management at Rendezvous Bay Hotel rate a solid 4 stars. From the housekeeping staff to the wait staff at the Cedar Grove Restaurant (very good food here by the way), everyone was friendly, efficient and eager to please guests. Bart van Deventer, the resident manager, is a real gem and takes time every day to check in with the guests to see if everything is going well or if anything is needed. Despite a very busy schedule, he is always happy to spend a few minutes chatting or answering questions.
We found exactly the vacation we were looking for at the Rendezvous Bay Hotel. That gorgeous long beach and the incredible aquamarine color of the ocean have to be seen to be believed! If, like us, you want to experience a true Caribbean casual beach vacation, we highly recommend the Rendezvous Bay Hotel. We now understand why they have so many repeat guests and families that have been coming to the hotel for over thirty years.
