Antigua & Barbuda Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Rex Blue Heron 01/12/2004
Reviewers Rating: Fair
I just got back from 8 days at the Rex Blue Heron last night (Jan. 11, 2003). My first impression of the resort as we pulled up in our taxi was less than ok - I nearly cried. The hotel looks like it needs major renovation work done. It is clean and functional, but that's it.
The food is ok. Buffet style for every meal except breakfast if you want eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. Typical dinner would be 3 cold salads (tossed salad, chicken salad, pasta salad), rolls/butter, 1 soup, steamed mixed vegetables, roasted potatoes, rice, local fish, chicken, 1 carving station (overcooked turkey, ham, pork, beef, or lamb), and dessert (1 pie or cake). Lunch is similar, but on a smaller scale - no carving station and no dessert (fruit salad instead each day).
The beach is wonderful and really made my vacation much better. Calm blue waters for the most part and beach chairs all along the stretch of beach. Snorkeling from the beach was not possible as there really weren't any fish and the water was sometimes too murky to even see to the bottom. The resort does provide ocean kayaks, pedal boats, sunfish sailing boats, etc.
The room we had overlooked the pool and some of the beach. We had cable tv, but only 10 channels (CNN, USA, TBS, HBO, and the other channels rotated among CBS, local Antiguan station, A&E, Discovery, etc.). The bathroom was adequate - decent water pressure, tub/shower combination, etc. The only major downfall to the room were the big cracks between the door and floor and the bathroom window screen. These cracks led to A LOT of mosquito bites all over arms, legs, back, neck, etc. Oh yes, and all the rooms have a small but ok balcony.
Overall, I feel my vacation was ok, definitely not a trip I want to repeat, but at least I got to see another island and had a chance to get away for a week on vacation.
If you choose to stay at this resort, you should seriously consider scheduling at least a few day trips just to get outside of the resort (I'd recommend Eli's Eco Tour, aka Adventure Antigua).
