Antigua & Barbuda Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Royal Antiguan 04/22/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
I took my family, including my adult daughter who was on crutches after breaking her leg. The staff was FANTASTIC! I hope Ian, the manager reads this. Donald at the front desk and shy Bobbie, a bell hop are fine people with a smile and wanting to help. We adopted Melrose who drives taxi. I could go on, but the point is the staff is basically fine people who want to do a good job. I'm sure if you are a grouch and are mean, they may smile and not want to interact... but most everyone was more than willing to be helpful (bartender was slow). We got a killer deal on the standard rooms and upgraded one to ocean view. It was beautiful with a nice balcony. The grounds are lovely and the beach is wonderful. The vendors can be a bit excessive, but a polite "no thanks" is all it takes. One woman vendor was actually genuinely friendly regardless of us not buying and came by on the beach to wish up well knowing when we were leaving. The Antiguans ARE ! really fine people who reciprocate friendliness readily. You can kayak, paddle boat or snorkle without paying. I saw an octopus and the Andes is sunk off shore (swim along the shore, then swim out... there can be a little current out to sea and if you aren't a good swimmer...). Fort Barrington is at the far end of the beach up a hill and worth the hike, especially for sunrise. You can also hike over to Five Island Village and check out Galley Bay and Hawksbill. I was NOT all-inclusive. The prices can be stiff. There was entertainment and activities. One night, there was a big stell drum band... 15 people, the Ebonites. An on-site casino, not used much. A Club, the girls went to Kareoke and had a good time. Nice pool. The AI's go there for the swim up bar so they can drift into oblivion. It is a bit removed and taxis are not cheap. But it worked for us since the same price is charged for one or for ma! ny. I hired Melrose by the day and he showed us the in's and out's of the Island. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Oceanview has a balcony and small refrigerator. We had a great time and made a lot of friends. I wish I was there now.
