The Cayman Islands Restaurant & Dining Reviews
Ye Old English Bakery 09/30/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
While we found much of the food in Grand Cayman to be very mediocre, we did thoroughly enjoy this place. They have two locations - one on the waterfront in Georgetown...right where all the ships let people off...and one on the way to the airport...your guess is as good as mine regarding the exact location but it was less than 10 minutes from the airport.

We ate here 3 times - two breakfasts and a lunch. My husband tried something called a "bap", which looked like a big yeast roll with ketchup, butter and fillings. One day it had egg, sausage and bacon (note, most of the bacon is like an irish bacon, which we are not used to), the other it just had sausage. He ordered it twice and was skeptical the first day, but went back for more so I think it was good. "Different" was how he described it.

I stuck with pastries, having a doughnut the first day. It was a light and fluffy fried thing, coated in regular granular sugar (just like my mom used to make growing up!!) and then sliced open and filled with REAL whipped cream (albeit unsweetened) and jam...most excellent. Day two was a similar doughnut but filled with lemon...equally good. I also had part of a cinnamon roll, which was not as sweet as I like mine (the sweeter the better!!), but was light, fluffy, fresh and filled with cinnamon nonetheless. Everything was very, very fresh and good. And the places were super clean!!

We also went back for lunch on the way to the airport. I didn't end up getting one, but they had baked potatoes with a multitude of toppings!! Sometimes, that's just enough for a light lunch and it made me wish we had found this place sooner. We both had sandwiches - one tuna and one chicken salad. My tuna was fine (it's tuna), but the bread they put it on was excellent - that same fresh and homey quality. I thought my husband's chicken salad lacked taste, but I thought every single chicken dish I had in Cayman was bland, dry and tough. Maybe it was just me!! He seemed to like it.

The location by the airport has less of a selection of pastries, but they did have chocolate chip shortbread that day and man oh man was it worth however much they charged me for it (by the end of the week, I just stopped asking!!). The perfect blend of butter, a touch of sugar and some sweet mini chocolate chips. We took the last one or I would have brought a dozen home with me and skipped the rum cakes!

So two sandwiches, one soda, a bag of chips and a shortbread cookie came to US$17 and change. Not bad considering the other prices we spent on lunch. And just the right type of food if you don't want anything too heavy before a flight or after snorkeling. We highly recommend this place.

Happy travels!

Cindy
